The first day of the rest of my life

Yesterday was my latest graduation. I now officially possess a master's degree, and can now actually use the rental-car coupons they gave me both times I graduated. Ah, the perks of being 25!

But if I am to believe what every teacher I had from preschool on up said, then I just finished the best years of my life. Holy shit.

Time to get married. Just kidding.

I need help. And brakes. A job with benefits would be really nice too.

Don't buy that old line, Ian. Your college years are no better or worse than any others. I had great times and rotten ones in college, and in grad school (all three times). And I've had rotten times and great ones outside the precincts of Academe.

Hmm. I'll happily lend a helping hand. Or two.

Congratulations. I spent eleven years in college -- three for undergrad, two for masters, six for doctorate -- and I don't regret a minute of it, even though I'm not doing exactly what it is I had studied for or planned.

Here's my advice: take some time off. Decompress. Allow yourself some time to yourself, even if it's just a couple of days or even for an afternoon.

I do that every so often. This weekend I hopped in the car, put the top down, and drove to Key Largo for lunch at a little Mexican restaurant. I drove back with the Beach Boys blasting away on the CD player.

Then when you are ready, go get 'em, Tiger. And let me know if you want to take a drive to the Keys.

Congratz Ian! You're now officially certified to be a responsible productive member of society. As for the marriage and kids, they're overrated. You've got lots of time for that later.

Thanks, Jeremy! And don't worry about my joining the ranks of married/reproductive society anytime soon. I'm trying to uproot the anchor enough as it is.
